Let's Play Ukulele

The purchase of thirty ukuleles were used as part of a new six-eight week music unit for fourth and fifth grade Salem students.  Students learned how to play a new instrument, played as soloist and as part of an ensemble, and applied the musical skills they have been learning since Kindergarten.

The Memory Project

The Art Honor Society created portraits of teens and children around the world who have been orphaned, neglected, or disadvantaged to provide them with special memories that capture their childhood.

From Band Room to Broadway

Picture
All music students at Schreiber were given the opportunity to hear Shelagh Abate, a professional French Horn player talk with them about what it takes to have a career in music.  Shelagh, a graduate of Massapequa High School, and Boston College, makes her living as musician in Broadway pit orchestras.  Shelagh said that her life really changed when she attended Usdan summer camp for the Arts and realized that playing French horn was what she was meant to do.   She told the kids that you can't just be talented, you need to be a nice person too.  She urged them all to find their creative outlet, whether it's in the arts, or not and to  pursue your dreams.

Broadway Workshop

Fifth grade students worked with a Music Director and a cast member to learn the staging, music and choreography of "Arabian Nights" from the Broadway production of Aladdin.  The students went on to see Aladdin later that day featuring the very performers they worked with.
